TASK 2

This BFI film festival front cover has 4 of the Key Conventions:

Central Image: The central image used creates the impression that one of the main films that are going to be shown are of the horror genre. This is because of the films use of an extreme close up into the eyes of the character that are being shown in the title.
Language: The text that is shown is based in the top and middle third of the front cover and is in big bold writing.
Colour Scheme: The colour scheme that is used suggests that the content of the film festival booklet may be full of horror films.
Title Of Publication: The title of publication is clearly visible in the top third of the booklet as well in bright colours.

TASK 3:

BFI Horror Film Festival 2012: What I admire about this film brochure front cover is that the central image associates with what the genre of the festival.

BFI Science Fiction Film Festival: The things that I will be taking from this is how the logo in every BFI brochure may be in the same layout it is not in the same colour. Furthermore, I will also be taking into consideration the use of simplicity instead of trying to make it to complex

I like the way it has a different colour background to suggests that it is a different film they are talking about instead of the same one.

In this brochure I like how they stuck with a basic three colour, colour scheme. It may be a basic style however it shows prestige and class.

Planning

My front cover is going to consist of the protagonists eye with an additional effect done in photo shop.

My contents page will look like a professional screening from a film and will also consists of the protagonist in his own section.

The double page spread will have the right hand side the protagonist and on the left hand side it would be the protagonists nemesis. It will also have a ring in the middle where the fight would take place.

MEST2: BBFC Institution Research

MEST2: BBFC Institution Research

What is the BBFC?

The BBFC is an independent, non-governmental body which classifies cinema films. It's a not for profit organisation, it's income is from the fees it charges for its services.

How are films rated?

Films are viewed alone in a single room made to look the average home to give the feeling of the home. A translator is called in if the film is a foreign one.

Issues faced when categorising a film?

Is it harmful to the viewer
Does it challenge the law
Does it portray the dominant idologies
Does it contain Violence
Does it contain Sex
Does it contain Discrimination
Does it contain abusive Language

BBFC Ratings

U:Hardly any mild bad language.

PG: Only Mild bad language allowed.

12/12A: Strong language must be used infrequently.

15:You can use strong language to a certain extent. It may only go beyond a certain extent if it is justified by the context.

18:There are no boundaries on the language that is allowed to be shown.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight had a controversial age rating because of the constant use of violence which children may not be use to it. Furthermore, the public had brought up the fact that the pencil scene was very aggressive and violent. The jokers character also caused controversy as it refereed to the violence scene in London.

HOT FUZZ
This film was given a 15 rating due to it's frequent use of strong language and comic bloody violence. This is understandable as the genre of the film is a thriller, comedy. The blood is shown in the film but in a funny way to make it comical and not so serious.

Film Pitch

PROJECT Kr: FILM PITCH

Projet Kr is about a 17 year old boy, Jason Folev, who enjoys studying chemistry at school however in his spare time Jason takes part in illegal underground fight clubs. Jason's full intention in joining these clubs was to find a way to release his anger and frustration with the world out on people who feel like him. As a child Jason grew up with very loving parents however one day as Jason and his parents were coming home from a movie Jason asked his parents to take a short cut to the car threw an alley. Next thing Jason knew he woke up in the alley in a pool of blood which originated from his parents corpse. From that day Jason has been blaming himself for his parents murder. The 3 minute clip is going to show Jason as a caring young man helping the people around him and studying for his chemistry exam. During the shots that will be shown of Jason being the caring young man he is there will be background narration of Jason talking about his past and what he does for a living. As the narration goes onto him talking about his part time activities the background music that will gradually be playing is going to drastically change to a more fast paced beat/ heart beat it will then change to a montage shot of his life outside school.

Films that are similar to (Project: Kr) are:
Dexter: The choice of having a double personality is similar to Dexter as well as the use of a voice over.
Breaking Bad: The chemistry side of our production is similar to Breaking Bad.

Pre Production: Target Audience

Target audience

The target audience that we were originally thinking of going with was 15 - 35 year olds who are in the social class group of A B C1 C2 and that go into the psychographic of Aspirer, Succeeder, Explorer and Reformer. After our focus group feedback we successfully chose to target a more niche target audience instead of a mass target audience.

The age range we decided to go with is 15 - 35 years of age because films that are similar to our production and that have made a successful profit are targeting at this general target audience. Furthermore, the females in the focus group said that even though our production had a good idea its not targeted at the female gender as there was no significant female character for them to identify with. So the population from female to male that we will be targeting the production towards is 35% to 65%. The psychographic group we decided to target the production at is Explorers. This is because they are the group that are more inclined to trying and testing new products that they have never tried. This may be an unusual target audience for an art house production however I think it will be a good idea.

The Psychographic groups that people may belong is shown below:

Rigid, strict, authoritarian and chauvinist values, oriented to the past and to Resigned roles. Brand choice stresses safety, familiarity and economy. (Older)

Alienated, Struggler, disorganised - with few resources apart from physical/mechanical skills (e.g. car repair). Heavy consumers of alcohol, junk food and lotteries, also trainers. Brand choice involves impact and sensation.

Domestic, conformist, conventional, sentimental, passive, habitual. Part of the mass, favouring big and well-known value for money 'family' brands. Almost invariably the largest 4Cs group.

Materialistic, acquisitive, affiliative, oriented to extrinsics ... image, appearance, charisma, persona and fashion. Attractive packaging more important than quality of contents. (Younger, clerical/sales type occupation)

Strong goal orientation, confidence, work ethic, organisation ... support status quo, stability. Brand choice based on reward, prestige - the very best . Also attracted to 'caring' and protective brands ... stress relief. (Top management)

Energy - autonomy, experience, challenge, new frontiers. Brand choice highlights difference, sensation, adventure, indulgence and instant effect - the first to try new brands. (Younger - student)

Freedom from restriction, personal growth, social awareness, value for time, independent judgement, tolerance of complexity, anti-materialistic but intolerant of bad taste. Curious and enquiring, support growth of new product categories. Select brands for intrinsic quality, favouring natural simplicity, small is beautiful.(Higher Education)

FOCUS GROUP FEEDBACK

FOCUS GROUP FEEDBACK

The research our group did allowed us to receive reliable and objective views on our low budget film. This would include additions to the film idea, tagline plot etc. The feedback was mostly positive however the focus group didn't agree with the choice of target audience and they also said that we would need to shoot the fight scene in a way that would not make the audience laugh.

Quotes From The Focus Group

  • Wouldn't watch, but interesting
  • Narrative needs to be thorough, more work needed on the 30 minute film compared to the 3 minute clip. Isn't clear.
  • Good idea as a short film
  • Need to cover the 15+ certificate
  • Definitely male is right gender focus for this film
  • Fight scene needs other characters that won't seem funny (audience don't know)
  • Tagline could be changed if narrative is not changed
  • Violence needs to be reduced as much as possible. Build atmosphere but don't involve fighting scene

What we as a group will take into consideration

From the focus group feedback we decided that the film is mostly male oriented as most of the females in the focus group said they would not watch it. However, the females in the focus group said that they like the sound of the narrative. Furthermore, the focus group also said that they liked the idea of the protagonist having a split personality of being a fighter as well as a science nerd.
